What is the in-office teeth-whitening process like?

Before your treatment, Dr. Yun places a lip and cheek retractor in your mouth to keep your teeth fully exposed for optimal whitening.

Next, Dr. Yun applies a gingival barrier to protect your gums. She then places whitening gel on each tooth. The whitening molecules dissolve stains and pull the particles out of your teeth.

After 15 minutes, Dr. Yun suctions the gel away, rinses your teeth, and dries them. She evaluates the change in tooth color and repeats the process up to four times to achieve your desired level of whitening.

What is the take-home teeth-whitening process like?

Dr. Yun creates custom-fitted whitening trays that distribute whitening gel evenly over every tooth. For up to 14 days at home, you'll use syringe-style applicators to place a drop of gel in every tooth slot. You’ll wear the trays for a specified amount of time each day.

There are three different whitening formulas. Dr. Yun helps you choose the right one based on how much whitening you need and how quickly you want results. The options include:

16% gel: 4-6 hours daily, or overnight
22% gel: 60 minutes once or twice a day, or overnight
35% gel: 15 minutes twice a day or 30 minutes once a day. Not for overnight use.

If you have badly stained teeth, you might use in-office whitening to jump-start the process and then use take-home kits to refine your smile for ideal results.

How often do I need to whiten my teeth to maintain my results?

If you take good care of your teeth, have regular teeth cleanings, and avoid coffee and other teeth-staining substances, you can expect whiter teeth for up to a year. Dr. Yun recommends a touch-up whitening schedule, usually once or twice a year, to help you maintain your desired level of whiteness.
